After a short break, the league resumed for the first race of the new season at Albert Park in Melbourne.
Perhaps the two most notable reshuffles within the teams were the partnering of Rexxy and Ramdrop at Ferrari, and the arrival of Westyy to partner OmegaIV at McLaren, with both pairs aiming for a shot at the title.
In Qualifying, it was Westyy who would ultimately claim his first pole position, which was in turn McLaren’s first pole since Japan last season. The top six drivers all qualified within a second of each other, albeit that some had set their times on the harder soft compound as opposed to the supersoft.
The focus during the race, however, would quickly shift to the two drivers that had finished first and second in the championship in Season 15; Ramdrop and OmegaIV. After an incident-filled first lap which saw the McLaren team mates make unfortunate contact and left Morturiom without a front wing, it was to be a battle between the formerly mentioned drivers for the race win. Having been unable to close in on Ramdrop by the end of the first stint, OmegaIV took a gamble which involved him making a daring strategy choice. He would attempt to undercut Ramdrop by pitting onto the supersoft tyre for his middle stint. This move paid dividends for the McLaren driver, who was able to close right up on the Ferrari, at one point travelling side-by-side with him for several corners. Omega was unable to make any kind of manoeuvre stick, however, and thus sat directly behind Ramdrop for the remainder of the race. The Ferrari eventually crossed the line 3.312 seconds ahead after a fiercely contested 58 laps.
